Las celebraciones de Año Nuevo son eventos que sin duda hacen que la emoción y la expectación por tan simbólica fecha se eleven; en el ambiente se respira un aire de esperanza y buenos deseos porque el nuevo año traiga cosas buenas para todos.
New Year's celebrations are events that undoubtedly make the excitement and expectation for such a symbolic date rise; in the atmosphere there is an air of hope and good wishes for the new year to bring good things for everyone.
As expected, Barcelona and Madrid are two cities where celebrations flood the streets and everyone can catch the general joy on New Year's Eve. On this occasion, we will tell you what activities you can do to welcome the new year with open arms and learn how it is celebrated in Spain.
Before proceeding to explain what is done on the night of December 31 in each of these cities, you should know that in Spain, as a general tradition, people eat 12 grapes to the sound of the last 12 chimes of the year. With each one of them, people make a wish that they hope will come true in the new year. If the grapes are eaten before the last bell, it is believed that one will have good luck in the new year.
In Madrid, people gather in the Puerta del Sol square to celebrate and count down according to the clock of the Royal Palace Casa de Correos by eating the 12 grapes mentioned above. In this square there are different stands where people buy wigs, masks and other elements that allow you to dress up and receive the year with the best attire. This event is one of the most famous in the Spanish capital.
For its part, Barcelona usually organizes a show of pyrotechnics, lights and projections on the Avenida de la Reina Maria Cristina. There, locals gather around 9:00 p.m. to watch the show, count down and eat the lucky grapes.
In both cities, the celebrations are followed by a dinner among family and friends either at a well-known restaurant in the city center or at the home of a loved one. Eating national desserts such as chocolate or halva with nuts is believed to be a good omen for prosperity and luck in the coming year.
This year, both celebrations will experience changes due to the emerging cases of Covid-19 in the country.
